ADD/ADHD
The programs of The Pinnacle Schools are designed for struggling teens that are experiencing difficulties such as ADD or ADHD.
Typically diagnosed in childhood, ADHD still affects many teens. The symptoms - inattention, impulsiveness, and hyperactivity are intrusive, and can interfere with a teen's life. During the teen years, especially with hormonal changes, symptoms of ADHD may intensify:
- Distraction
- Irritability
- Poor Concentration
- Hyperactivity
- Impulsiveness
- Insomnia
ADD or ADHD often coexists with other conditions such as learning disabilities, anxiety disorders, mood disorders, oppositional defiance disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder. Drug abuse can cause behavioral aberrations that mimic ADD or ADHD. Proper diagnosis and effective treatment is extremely important but often inadequate in an outpatient setting. When an adolescent is admitted to The Pinnacle Schools Elk River Treatment Program (ERTP), a full medical and psychological evaluation begins with a Treatment Team consisting of the child's parents, medical physicians, a child psychiatrist, licensed counselors, registered nurses, registered dieticians, and certified educators.
If medication is required, ERTP provides physician-directed medication management and registered nurses who monitor your child on a daily basis. The residential setting provides a safe environment for your child should medications need adjustment.
Many teens with ADHD have difficulty in school. An academic curriculum offered at ERTP was originally developed by the University of Miami for ADHD children. The small, intimate setting at ERTP minimizes distractions while qualified instructors assist students with their problem areas.
